CAN begins cancer awareness, launches women Haido team

KUWAIT: Member of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the National Campaign for Cancer Awareness (CAN), Dr. Hussa Majid Al-Shaheen, said CAN has launched the first activity of the women’s Haido team through a swimming contest for skilled girls in cooperation with the Kuwait School Sports Association on Thursday (August 24) at Suad Mohammad Al-Sabah School in Mansouriya.

Al-Shaheen pointed to the role of the campaign, saying it has achieved a lot and has enjoyed a noble Amiri patronage, besides working on achieving distinguished goals in the fields of cancer awareness and early detection. She said CAN set up a strategy in which there were many initiatives to increase awareness. Haido Club was formed in cooperation with Haido Football Academy. Since the start of the initiative, sporting activities have been used as a means to increase health awareness. The public has been urged to maintain a healthy balance through physical activity and sound nutrition.

Indicators show that obesity rates among children and youths have reached 35% among males and 28% among females, while they are 70% in male adults and 75% in females, which confirms the need for awareness of sound food habits. Dr. Hussa thanked the Kuwait School Sports Association and Higher Education for holding the championship. Meanwhile, a member of the board and secretary of the Kuwait Society for Preventing Smoking and Cancer (KSPSC) said cancer case rates are on the increase.

Dr. Al-Shimmari said officials of the KSPSC are still working towards spreading awareness about cancer and targeting all groups in society, and that is why the Haido Women Team was formed. Head of the Kuwait School Sport Association, Faisal Maqseed, thanked the trainers and coaches for their patience and efforts. He also thanked his parents for their continued care.

The results of the tournament were as follows: (First): Sanaa Al-Qatami, Al-Zain Al-Ghaith, Deema Al-Mutairi, Farah Al-Najada, and Hoor Al-Qattan. (Second): Maria Al-Ghareeb, Fatima Al-Rifaee, Maha Abdullah, Amal bin Rizq, and Jumana Maitham. (Third): Sarah Al-Beloush, Fatima Al-Sayer, Sheikha Al-Ameeri, Rayan Bu Nashi, and Zahraa Askar.
