Charities can receive funds from abroad through e-payments only

Minister of Commerce and Industry and Minister of Social Affairs and Community Development Fahd Al-Shariaan sent a letter to the Governor of the Central Bank of Kuwait to re-allow charity societies to receive donations from outside the country via Visa or MasterCard.

A local Arabic daily said, after receiving the request, the CBK is said to have issued a list the charity societies authorized to receive donations from abroad through e-payment companies.

The sources added Minister Al-Shariaan had sent a letter last July regarding the ban on electronic payment companies receiving any amounts from outside the country via Visa or MasterCard on the accounts of charity societies, and that the Central Bank responded to the minister’s letter and issued a circular to all those engaged in payment systems business regarding the ban.

The sources pointed out that a number of Kuwaiti charities have submitted requests to be excluded from the decision due to receiving funds from abroad to implement their charity projects through electronic payment applications, and that all private electronic payment operations are linked to a special system with banks, which is a safe system characterized by transparency and the possibility of financial control over it.
